Succesful kick-off for Science City Aktiv Mobil in Salzburg

On 23rd of March, the proof of concept phase in Salzburg started (prepared by project partners Salzburg Research, University of Salzburg and Trafficon), in which participants can test the situation-aware nudges for sustainable mobility. For this occasion, Salzburg-Research hosted the kick-off event for the campaign “Science City Aktiv Mobil” in a local neighborhood in Salzburg. 35 visitors joined us for an introduction of the project by Dr. Claudia Luger-Bazinger and demonstration and technical instruction by David Leistner. Techno-Z representative Monika Sturmer additionally introduced offers in the area for active mobility. The talk was followed by the opportunity for networking over lunch and the option to use a bicycling repair service.

Following this kick-off, Science City Aktiv Mobil will run for the next 2 month until 23rd of May. During this time, participants will receive nudges as notifications via an app and will be able to collect gamified points in the app for sustainable commutes to work. Additionally, the DyMoN dashboard is launched as an online version as well as on info screens in the area.

Save the Date: Sustainable Mobility Hackathon

As part of the DyMoN project, Sustainability InnoCenter hosts an international Hackathon Event centering around different sustainability challenges with the aim to find solutions using Nudging and behavioural change techniques. The Hackathon will be held 11th and 12th of May in Uppsala, Sweden, as a hybrid event with the possibility to join online.

Target group for the Hackathon is everyone interested in developing ideas and solutions for the presented challenges. It is possible to join as an individual and find a group in information Meetings or via Slack.

There are three Challenges proposed by the project Partners of the hackathon:

Uppsala kommun

Uppsala municipality has a mobility pool, that employees are free to use, including cars, bikes and other modes of transport. The goal of this first challenge is to increase the effectiveness of this mobility pool using behaviour change techniques. The use of the transport mobility pool can reduce the number of cars on the road through allowing people to share their sustainable transport options. The goal is to increase the number of people that use the mobility pool, as well as the efficiency of the process of booking and reserving a vehicle.

Nudgd

The Challenge proposed by Nudgd includes working with the Smart Nudges Platform (developed by Nudgd), that uses personalized, smart nudges to create behaviour change. One of the most challenging parts of working with behavioral change is to reach the right audience. This is why the proposed challenge is to find creative, accessible, and innovative ways to reach car users in a non-intrusive manner that can be reused for multiple stakeholders such as workplaces, municipalities, public transport companies, real estate companies, etc. The solution should apply to one or several of the following target groups; employees, clients, citizens, visitors, and/or tenants.

Gävle kommun

Gävle city has devised a cycling campaign known as “Year- Round cyclists,” combining an information initiative with an app to incentivize users to use their bikes regularly by offering points that can be redeemed at designated city stores. The proposed sustainable transportation initiative includes a technical platform (in a form of an app or similar )  and a reward system to encourage users to adopt sustainable transportation methods. The information campaign will educate users on the benefits of sustainable transportation, while also providing information on how to plan and optimize sustainable transportation routes.

The Challenge proposed by Gävle kommun is the following: Identify the challenges that city of Gävle will have if  the city decides to  implement such a technical platform in reality , prioritize 3 of these challenges and finally  identify  the best solution for the first prioritised challenge.

The Department of Geoinformatics at the University of Salzburg and Salzburg Research, together with the DyMoN project consortium, are organizing a summer school from June 27th to July 6th, 2023. The Summer School is going to take place in Salzburg, Austria and is organized as an on-site event.

The summer school is planned as part of the DyMoN project, which revolves around the development of innovative ways to promote sustainable mobility. The Summer School’s outcomes will inform future research activities within and beyond this international research project.

The application deadline is March 15th, 2023. We advise for early registration using the application form.

Focus of the Summer School

The key focus of the Summer School is on interdisciplinary methods that support the design, planning, and evaluation of strategies directed at promoting sustainable mobility. Mobility behavior of people is the result of a complex interplay between internal and external factors, which can hardly be captured within a single domain, be it sociology, planning, psychology, or engineering. In this Summer School we are going to anticipate the complexity of human mobility and pursue integrated cross-domain approaches. Bringing together concepts, tools and insights from mobility research, psychology and spatial analysis bears the potential for promoting sustainable mobility comprehensively and effectively.

We invite students and experts, who share interest in sustainable mobility and are enthusiastic about learning and working in an interdisciplinary setting. The program of the Summer School is resting on three pillars, which will be consequently interconnected throughout the time:

  • Sustainable mobility: mobility paradigms, spatial aspects of mobility, inter-relations between environmental factors and mobility behaviour, planning for and promoting sustainable mobility
  • Basics of geoinformatics (GIS): spatial data models and representations, considerations of spatial data collection and ethics, methods of spatial analysis and geo-visualization to assist transport modelling and planning
  • Digitally enabled behaviour change: models of behaviour change, enabling behaviour change in the digital environment through various approaches (e.g., gamification, nudging, community aspects), behaviour change techniques, designing effective digital interventions for sustainable mobility, holistic approaches to behaviour change.

Organisation

The summer school will consist of lecture session, hands-on workshops, a field trip, group work, and social events. The highlight of the summer school is the joint attendance of the GI_Salzburg conference that takes place from 4th to 6th of July, where you will present your final projects. The conference is an excellent opportunity to learn about new advances in geoinformatics and engage in interdisciplinary discussions. See detailed information on the conference’s website.

The city of Salzburg is located in the Austria-Bavarian border region with mountains, lakes and numerous cultural sights in close proximity. The venue of the summer school is located in the north of the city, close to the main station on the campus of the Faculty of Digital and Analytical Sciences (Schillerstraße 30, 5020 Salzburg). During the summer school we will get to know the city during excursions and social events.

The language of the event is English. The number of participants is limited to 20. Participation fee of 450 € will have to be paid prior to the event. Conference attendance, coffee breaks, a dinner and a lunch event, and all materials are covered by the participation fee. Accommodation and travelling are not included and have to be organized by participants individually. We highly recommend participants to bring along their personal laptops.

Helping cities shift mobility behaviour through digital nudging – lessons from a year into the DyMoN project

May 30th, 2022 – European cities are undergoing complex journeys towards more sustainable mobility systems, driven by social, environmental, and political factors. Since 2021, six project partners from Austria, Germany and Sweden have set the common goal of advancing research, supporting cities and their sustainable mobility goals. The transnational project, Dynamic Mobility Nudge (DyMoN), aims at gaining a better understanding about digital, data-based nudging and its role in supporting the shift to sustainable mobility behaviour.

A year into the project, DyMoN has co-created valuable knowledge on the role of nudging and data for sustainable mobility, consulting citizens, mobility managers, urban planners, and city representatives. Several international think tanks, interviews and workshops informed that while digital nudges could have a positive response, they raise concerns about data storage among citizens. More so, cities are in different phases of integrating nudging techniques in their urban mobility strategies; challenges being associated with limited awareness of the concept and its use and varying resources for adoption by different municipalities.

Within DyMoN, the concept of nudging for sustainable mobility has been investigated from a theoretical viewpoint first, to design the most effective methods for changing behaviour. Over the past year, the project has gained insights into the role of situation-aware nudges and spatial-temporal data, which has resulted in a data assessment matrix that describes necessary, suitable datasets for creating digital, data-based nudging. In addition, DyMoN has adopted the needs of city representatives and developed a concept dashboard, which aims at helping cities gain a better visual understanding of sustainable mobility and of nudges and their connection to the local mobility context. The project has also tested models for simulations on the effects of nudging to help cities integrate the nudging framework into their mobility planning.

Connecting existing research with user needs and publicly available data, the next two years of the project will have DyMoN develop an innovative digital nudging framework. Based on a nudging repository (a set of digital nudging methods), a data hub for connecting data sources and nudges and a handbook for city representatives, the DyMoN framework will be tested in Austria and Sweden. The project will conclude by contributing to the emerging field of digital nudging for sustainable mobility, providing cities with recommendations and innovative tools to design mode effective mobility interventions.
